Montenegro Roadtrip Tips: Everything You Need to Know about Renting a Car & Driving in Montenegro (1/3)
The first country. The first European stop on our round-the-Europe trip was Montenegro, the pearl of the Mediterranean sea. After a lovely 3 days in Podgorica, I rented a car with my family to take a road trip through Montenegro. Montenegro, the black mountain country, is made up of small-town and cities, like Budva, Tivat, Kotor, Cetinje, Zabljak, Kolasin. Because of its resorts and beaches, Montenegro is a super popular vacation hotspot for European and international vacationers.
The bus was not a possible option for us, since we have 5 members family. So, we rented a car to give ourselves more flexibility to stop in smaller towns and check out different parts of the beautiful black mountain country.
How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Car in Montenegro?
We booked a car 3 months before the trip, via local online service Respecta Car. The daily cost of our car, a Hyundai i20, was very reasonable and affordable. However, the low upfront cost of the vehicle rental is supplemented with a plethora of upsells, add-ons, and extra charges. We paid €200.45 for our 5-day car rental, which works out to be €40.09 per day.
- €35.69 x 5 – daily charge for 5 days
- €20.04 – different location drop-off
- €8.38 – toll road charges
- €7.00 – tax
We also paid a total of €30.00 for a full tank) for fuel on our 5-day road trip.
From our 5-day road trip in Montenegro, here’s everything we learned about the country, renting a car and driving through Montenegro.
Booking a Rental Car in Montenegro
We booked our car via local online booking service Respecta Car. Which is one of the most popular and reliable services in Montenegro.
- Pre-Booking Your vehicle online: Pre-booking your car online should save you money compared showing up to a random rental agency and booking on the spot.
- Also, we suggest you book via local booking services, they are much more reliable and cheaper than global services.
- Size matters, definitely: The bigger or more premium the car, the higher the cost. There was no way we could set up our two backpacks into a small car so we choose with the next size up, a Hyundai i20.
- Note Down Every Ding and Scratch on the Car: To be extra cautious we took photos of every little mark on the car in case there was any dispute about who caused the damage at the end of our rental. I’m happy to report that we had no damage to our vehicle at the end of our rental! The staff was very friendly!
